Only a pet can be a best friend. A pet, unlike a person, will never betray. He only hurts a person once, when he dies. I think that the souls of pets are reborn into humans in subsequent incarnations. And those chosen few who will be allowed into paradise will be judged by human deeds, not dog ones.
